What to check before deciding

  • Match the country to your family's main objective.
  • Check your migration and tax residence separately.
  • Review the relevant page for legal status, passport, or assets.

The role of Costa Rica in your personal strategy

Costa Rica is the Latin American alternative to Bali and Thailand: exotic, oceanic and lifestyle, but with a Western legal system, official residency status and real security of ownership.

Costa Rica addresses two major issues that are often left hanging in Asia: legal residence status and unconditional property ownership. Here you receive official status with a clear route to permanent residence and citizenship, and do not depend on repeated visa runs and temporary solutions.

In Costa Rica, a foreigner owns real estate and business directly: without nominee arrangements, schemes with local partners and 50-year leases. Article 19 of the Constitution enshrines the equality of foreigners with citizens, and the country without an army has been directing resources to institutions, education and medicine since 1948.

Costa Rica: country, law, economy

Key parameters of Costa Rica for living, asset ownership, business and long-term strategy: status, property, taxes and legal protection.

Direct ownership

You buy land and business in your name. No local partners with a controlling stake. Full control over assets and protection of property.

Territorial tax

Law 7092: Income from activities outside the country is not subject to tax. This is convenient for IT, traders and global consulting in the RULATAM system.

Free Zones (FTZ)

Regime for export companies: 0% corporate income tax and 0% import duties, subject to conditions. Entering the regime takes about three months.

100% ownership

The law does not require the participation of local citizens. You can be the sole director and owner of your company without nominee structures.

Banking stability

State banks BCR and BNCR have constitutional status. Their reliability is higher than that of a private bank in the region, which enhances capital protection.

Operational connectivity

Only about three hours from Miami. For business with the USA, this is a fundamental argument and a convenient time zone.

Is Costa Rica right for you?

Costa Rica is suitable for those who want to live in the tropics legally, be closer to nature, not give up infrastructure and have a clear path to status. But it is less suitable for those who are looking for cheap Asia, the rhythm of a metropolis and a temperate climate with changing seasons.

1/6

Legal life in the tropics

Do you want to live in the tropics legally, and not constantly remain an “eternal tourist”?

You can live in Thailand, Bali and Vietnam for years - and still remain a tourist without normal rights, property and guarantees. Costa Rica closes this gap: there are formalized residence tracks, equal rights for foreigners with citizens, and a real path to a passport. You are not a guest who is simply tolerated, but a person with a clear legal status.

Cost of living

The main criterion for you is to live as cheaply as possible, like in Chiang Mai or Ubud?

Costa Rica is not a cheap country. Quality rentals in safe areas, private healthcare, international schools and good restaurants are closer to American standards. If the main selection criterion is the lowest possible daily budget, Southeast Asia is the clear winner. Costa Rica wins for other reasons.

Nature and infrastructure

Is it important for you to live closer to nature, but not give up medicine, the Internet and normal infrastructure?

Costa Rica combines tropical nature, ocean on both sides and developed everyday infrastructure. There is fast Internet, private clinics with international standards and direct flights to the USA. This is a rare option where you don’t have to choose between nature and civilization.

Rhythm of the city

Do you need the rhythm of a large Asian metropolis - metro, street food, nightlife and constant movement?

San Jose is not Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. There is no metro here, dense street food on every corner and nightlife for every taste. Life tends to congregate in the suburbs of Greater San Jose, the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and mountainous areas. The pace here is slower, the environment is calmer.

Property and business

Do you want to buy real estate and conduct business without nominee partners and complex workarounds?

In most Southeast Asian countries, foreign ownership of land is either prohibited or requires schemes with a local partner. In Costa Rica, a foreigner can buy land directly and register a company without the requirement of a local participant. This is not an exotic benefit, but a normal legal basis for life and ownership of assets.

Climate

Is it important to you to live in a temperate climate with real autumn, winter and changing seasons?

Costa Rica is a tropical country. There is a dry and rainy season, but there is no European temperature change. On the Pacific coast, the rainy season runs from May to November and often means afternoon showers. It is cooler in the mountains, but also humid. If you're looking for a true fall and winter experience, Costa Rica may disappoint.

Briefly: who is Costa Rica suitable for?

Costa Rica is suitable for those who want to live legally in the tropics, be closer to nature, have a clear path to residence, own real estate directly and not give up medicine, the Internet and basic infrastructure.

Costa Rica is less suitable for those who want cheap living at the level of Southeast Asia, the rhythm of a large metropolis, a mild temperate climate, a real change of seasons or a rich urban environment with nightlife.
